セキュリティ意識向上トレーニングは、ソーシャルエンジニアリング、フィッシング、および意図しないデータ漏えいのリスクを低減する、重要な人的レイヤーの防御策です。プログラムでは、フィッシングの試みの見分け方、安全なブラウジングの実践、パスワード管理の基本、インシデント報告の手順、および役割ごとのセキュリティ上の責任を扱う必要があります。PCI DSSでは、採用時および少なくとも年1回、フィッシングとソーシャルエンジニアリングを含む意識向上トレーニングが求められています（12.6.3）。その他のほとんどのフレームワークでは、実施頻度は組織の判断に委ねられています。フィッシング訓練のシミュレーションは、トレーニングが効果を上げているかを測定する一般的な方法です。
